Ice Ke Lim – Creative Ice Cream Flavours With Fried Mantou, Hidden Stall At Joo Chiat

It is undeniable that there are many NEW Ice Cream shops in Singapore, and we tracked almost one per week since “Phase 2” has started.

No kidding. I guess the thing about desserts helping to reduce stress is quite true for many.

Some of the more high profile ice cream openings include Hay Gelato (Bedok), Burnt Cones (Sunset Way), Three’s A Crowd (Little India), Gelatolabo (Cavan Road), as well as Inside Scoop (North Bridge Road).

To be really honest, I didn’t have intention to try Ice Ke Lim at Joo Chiat Place due a possibly hot environment and unanswered emails (when I wrote in to get some basic information).

It is located within a kopitiam as contrasted with the usual café concepts, and I was actually in the area to try out Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong’s mee pok noodles.

The owners noted a gap for Western-style ice cream in coffeeshops, and decided to set up this stall selling Asian and local inspired flavours.

Flavours are categorised into “Tok Kong” (premium, $5 per scoop) and “Wah Lau” (signature, $3.90 per scoop). I was hoping prices would be slightly lower than say than in an air-conditioned space (perhaps they needed more volume).

Tok Kong flavours which are rotating include Coconut Mango, Thai Milk Tea, Milo Kopi, Tropico Tang (mango, lemon and passion fruit sorbet), Chendol, Belgian Chocolate and Avocado YoYo.

The rest are Tahitian Vanilla, Lychee, Horlicks and Pisang Pisang – banana cake in a gelato.

Ice cream is produced in-house, with no eggs and preservatives in the making.

The one special thing is the inclusion of ice cream scoop within Fried or Steamed Mantou, which cost $5.50 for a Wah Lau flavour and $7 for Tok Kong.

Served in a paper holder, this proved to be slightly tricky or messy to consume (do I bite the whole thing, use the spoon or…). Plus, the ice cream would melt fast in the heat.

With that said, the fried mantou was surprisingly not too oily and retained that slight crisp and fluffy interior. The hot exterior also matched well (shiok!) with the cold ice cream.

The Orange with Chocolate flavour I had a smooth texture, though I wished it was creamier with richer mouthfeel, while sugar level would be lowered by a tad.

Otherwise, they have pretty fun and creative flavours, though I suspect they may do better in a café environment.
