Another gelato café. Is Canvas Gelato just like the others out there?
Located near the lift lobby of Central Square, one building next to Central Perk Singapore, Canvas Gelato sells gelato, waffles (soon-to-come), bakes (limited selection) and coffee.
Not the best location (a quiet mall located quite a distance from MRT stations), relatively small space of 14 seaters (takeaway highly recommended), and a maximum of 7 flavours of gelato on display (considered limited for a gelato shop).
My initial thoughts: Can be a worrying sign.
The gelato is priced according to weight, 80g for a Small Cup ($4.20), 120g for a Medium Cup ($6.30) and 180g for a Large Cup ($8.80).
Weight is measured after every scoop to ensure accuracy, which I felt was time-consuming though.
The flavours of the gelato could be a tad limited, ordinary and not that unique.
Think Latte, Matcha, Coconut for the gelato, and Passionfruit, Pineapple and Mandarin for the sorbets.
I ordered a Small cup of Passionfruit sorbet with Coconut gelato ($4.20) and a Medium cup of Matcha and Latte gelato ($6.30).
Appearance wise, the 40g difference (or 50% more gelato in Medium cup compared to Small cup) was not too significant, probably slightly taller?
While I enjoyed the Matcha and Latte with a tinge of bitterness from the tea leaves and coffee beans respectively, the texture was slightly on the icy side.
Not the best I had tried, but not the worst.
Our favourite was the passionfruit flavour which was citrusy and refreshing. Would have been better if the texture was less icy.
If Canvas Gelato can work on having more varied textures, and perfecting their craft with the textures, it could have been a more outstanding piece of art.
